I am sorry about all this ambiguity.

There is my machine using Win2K and there is another W98 machine, this is the internal network. Right now they are connected to each other through a small hub. Both the LAN cards have been configured to "Obtain an IP address automatically". This situation was all well, we could share each others files I could VNC to the other machine (never the other way round for VNC).

I used to use Dial-Up till recently. Now I have obtained an ADSL connection over the phone line, so it's modem has a connecter going into the second LAN card on my machine (I already had the LAN card installed a long time back for a cable ISP which stopped providing) also having "Obtain an IP address automatically".

As soon as they installed PPP on Ethernet Protocol on my machine something conked off, I could no longer access shared files but the other computer could access my shares, interestingly I still could VNC to the other computer. In this situation when I connected to the ADSL at times I used to get IP conflict messages which used to go away the second time round.

So I recently formatted and reinstalled Win2K and all (it was required as Perforce had also stopped working). Now it's is the other way round I can access shared files and not VNC (I use UltraVNC). Though now the IP conflict messages are gone I am not too sure if the VNC problem has to do with IP addresses, I have confirmed that VNC server is running on the other computer.

So I was hoping if I could fix IP addresses on the local network maybe these problems may resolve.
