Jay,

Having read the whole story, it's my impression that John actually managed to concentrate on work, notwithstanding what happened in his personal life and in his professional life. My hat off for that attitude, although I also get the impression that he probably has shown a little bit too much commitment and has shown signs of burnout. But I'm not sure about that impression.
