There may be some psychological need to know that you've put things in order, that somehow Universe makes sense. I know my workplace is pretty much a mess (since I'm working at home)... but my disk is neat. Not too many files in wrong directories :). Which is to say I'm not immune to that impulse myself, it just manifests differently.
