When I started getting these neck symptoms, I discovered it's my chair that was bad. Since it way still years before I could afford a real chair, I discovered that a minimal pillow is benefitial to my neck. I actually slept with my head slightly below my spine axis (mostly on the side) and it did me a lot of good.
This came to be such a habit, that I may sleep quite comfortably on a rug, just give me a bit of a pillow. But there's no way I can sleep with any part of pillow below my shoulder.
