Gaylen;
Sounds like we have had somewhat similar experiences. I was an electronics engineer working for a large corporation. For 8 years I did only work as an electronics engineer, and for the last 7 years at that company I was running 5 departments and doing my engineering work.
When the company was sold (Ampex) 16,000 people were fired one fine day. Simultaneously, electronics manufacturing left Silicon Valley (1990), and I had to find another job. After a quick evaluation I went into programming to earn enough to pay the bills, with one thought in mind. There are lots of Indians and not many Chiefs! Better to be a lowly worker ant then a prestigious boss! There are lots of ants but only one queen.
At age 63 I find my self having worked as a consultant from time to time and for the last 5 years I have worked for a major corporation. You never know what tomorrow will bring. Just be ready to reinvent yourself and enjoy the ride! :)
