Also, wider, heavier strings require more tension to achieve the same pitch. Winding strings make them much more flexible and also extends the range and keeps them in harmony, prevents pitch distortion, and prevents inharmonocity (can't think what is the exact word which really means loss of pitch????) Guitar strings become more inharmonic (spelling?) when they reach their breaking point.
