There's no problem installing and running VFP9 side by side with previous VFP versions. Make sure that they're not sharing foxuser.dbf.
A lot of changes has been made to VFP since VFP6. I would recomend you to read What's NEW in VFP 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0:

In particular, pay attention to SET ENGINEBEHAVIOR and SET REPORTBEHAVIOR commands.
