I don't think philatelists were ever regarded as cool! Now numismatists! ... :-)
I was into coin collecting. Still got them up in the attic: crinkly coins, aluminium coins, coins with holes through them, Kennedy silver dollars, Buffalo cents, Coronation crowns, Churchill crowns...
