How do youse guys pronounce "mandatory"?

I was in a presentation years ago where a Brit consistently said man-DATE-o-ry so I used that a few years later talking to another Brit. He looked at me funny, but was nice enough not to say anything.

I guess this matches with metalurgy, but it sounded so weird, like by someone whose first language isn't English, like, say, an Indian pronunciation (I used to have a Indian maths teacher who said: "Al-GEB-ra", "Arit'-METIC" and "Geo-METRY")
