I would flip it over from your design which would give the added benefit of putting a small rail around edge to hold the cake and masonite board from sliding off - always a fear. The handles could be notched out of the 2x4 ends before screw the frame to the plywood. I could then add Jim's idea of a neck strap the would go from the two outside/front corners. This might be a good temporary model until I design something out of steel or aluminum. Evan had some great ideas too, but they might take me a bit longer to implement.
