I do as you do, prepare a cursor for reports but I do not use a standard report template. The ability to create a base class for all reports would be nice. I run all reports with private dataSessions but have not been doing so with forms. Perhaps this error has taught me a lesson with respect to that practice

I still don't understand why issuing a browse remedied the error. At this point, it does not matter
