Please, folks, tell me what I missed here. What's being missed is that in a discussion of crime rates, Bennett didn't take long to raise the race card. The fact that he positioned his remark isn't relevant to me. I think this is more than just "foot-in-mouth" disease.
This isn't an issue about PC or hyper-sensitivity - it is a matter of hypocracy. When Bennett was more of a known figure in the mid 1980's, he talked about education, color-blind society, etc. I'm for those things as well and was an early supporter of his, until his game came across more like a political hustler than a sincere thinker.
It's just another example of a self-proclaimed conservative intellectual validating the image that liberal/centrist Americans have held as examples of the political right.
