Bulletin Board System - which was before the internet. You dialed in directly to their modems, and had access to whatever was on their servers, mostly messages from other members. It had a structure pretty much like UT, only with far fewer bells and whistles. The spirit of the community was pretty much the same, even though it was not a programmers' forum. But then, in those years, the guys who had computers AND modems pretty much were the geeks of the time.
