Memories of 1982 and our S-100 Computer Bulletin Board in Silicon Valley. Yes, that 300 baud Acoustic Modem really was great! The community that was on that Board was very cooperative towards everyone involved. We helped each other and enjoyed the experience and technology.

In 1982 many companies had modem connections to the LAN line. We began receiving telephone calls that sounded like a modem trying to make connection. Being naïve we did not know what was happening. We quickly found out that there were people trying to break into companies’ computers and steal or compromise data. Our company placed tracers on the phone lines so we could obtain the phone number of the caller. Yuck!

Well, with the Internet many things have improved over the performance of 300-baud modems. This includes security problems! :)

>Bulletin Board System - which was before the internet. You dialed in directly to their modems, and had access to whatever was on their servers, mostly messages from other members. It had a structure pretty much like UT, only with far fewer bells and whistles. The spirit of the community was pretty much the same, even though it was not a programmers' forum. But then, in those years, the guys who had computers AND modems pretty much were the geeks of the time.
