Unfortunately, the new rules point up pretty much exactly what I think is wrong with hockey. Since Bobby Orr decided that offense was not just the best, but the only, defense, there really hasn't been such a thing as a true 'defenseman' in hockey. Everybody wants to be a scorer. Now they've brought in new rules to try to make all those dreams come true. The real nuances of the game have become lost in the lust for goals.

There isn't much that is glamourous about doing a good defensive job in hockey. When I was growing up, there were guys who played defense and knew that's what they were put on earth to do. Guys like Dickie Moore and Allan Stanley. Nothing spectacular, but they sure made it tough for the scorers. Being a 20 goal scorer then was something. Now, being a 20 goal scorer is mundane.

It's like the nonsense that has infested basketball. Fans would rather see somebody hang on the rim, than to see players set up and execute a smart play. They think a great play is Dennis Rodman bashing the ball up into the stands. It may look spectacular, but all it really does is turn the ball over.

Hockey used to be about more than just scoring, but now the fans, the players, the coaches, and the owners really don't care about much else (except maybe fighting).

I've completely lost interest in the game. I would much prefer a well fought 2-1 game than a 10-7 game that happens because scoring has become easy. The new rules not only don't call me back to the game, they tell me clearly that the things I don't like about the game are going to be firmly entrenched.

>With the new rules they may actually have grabbed a few new fans that will watch a few games just to see how the new rules play out...
