Any system in general is as fast as the slowest part of it, and in the case of WANs, the bottleneck is the WAN (or LANs for that matter). If performance is an issue with you application, then you may want to focus on the improving the data transfered over the WAN in compressed format, rather than using a mechanisem that is not efficient in that area.
