Firebird is a very good open source database. It has a small footprint of 3 MB and a lot of entreprise class databases features (multi version concurrency control or MGA, automatic crash recovery, online backups, stored procedures,triggers - both before and after , views, autoincrement sequences.
It even has an Oracle mode build, Fyracle, capable of running Compiere ERP.
Is 100% free, even for commercial applications
