I went the other way: the laptop often stays in the car and I only connect my USB external disk to a local machine. Laptop use mostly in hotel and at new client sites. Dunno about your typical clients, but think about it... And in a few months I'll probably can get by using a large USB stick only - if they don't get more paranoid and block USB.
