I will not tell you what the number should be <s>, but I would make it big enough so that the user has put in several records and is using the app and seeing the benefits of the app until one day a message pops up and tells the user that (s)he can't add any more records.

I have also in the past added that annoying splash screen and the screen after you close the app stating that you only have X number of records left.
