That's about the most sense I've heard re Delphi/VFP for a long time. Clients ARE as leary about Delphi as they are about VFP. And stuff we take for granted in VFP simply isn't there. Some of the view indexing and cursor management springs to mind, as does macro substitution for HTML and other management.
Have you had a look at JBuilder or Supercede? Both thinking-person's development tools for the future IMHO...

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
