For those of you that didn't attend the recent Southwest Fox conference, there were a couple of announcements made during the keynote that should be of more than a little interest to the Visual FoxPro community. For one, the MS Fox Team is getting the redistribution restrictions lifted for the XSource.zip files that are included with Visual FoxPro. This is great news, and far from business as usual for MS. Now when a developer improves a particular portion of the source that ships with Visual FoxPro they will be able to share it and collaborate on it with other Visual FoxPro developers. For example, say you created an improved ReportPreview.app. Currently you can redistribute the app but not the source code. Well, when Microsoft makes the change to the EULA (scheduled for the same time that VFP 9.0 SP1 ships) you will be able to redistribute the source code as well. This opens the door to hundreds, if not thousands, of open source collaborative projects to improve and extend Visual FoxPro.

In the interest of furthering these opportunities and providing a centralized reporsitory and workspace for these efforts, I've set up a site called SednaX out on the GotDotNet site.

Though I was the one to set it up, it is not MY site. It is a site for and by the Visual FoxPro community. It is a site whose sole purpose is to improve and extend Visual FoxPro through efforts made by and for the Visual FoxPro Community. The work there will complement Microsoft's work on Sedna and will harness the experience, energy, and ideas of the Visual FoxPro Community to create some of the greatest add-ons, components, classes, and code libraries Visual FoxPro developers have ever seen. Through the cooperative efforts of community members, we can and will make a difference. This is not just another place to put Visual FoxPro classes and such so the community can download them, this is an all out assault on the very notion that Visual FoxPro has reached its end. Pure rubbish - we are on our way to being bigger and better than ever.

Join me and the rest of the Visual FoxPro Community out at SednaX. With your help we can invent the future of Visual FoxPro!
