I agree - true cold calling is horrible (and honestly, usually not a very good way of finding new clients anyway). Referral calling is a little more bearable, since you at least have an "in".
When I used to do computer repair, networking, etc. I had good luck with just picking an office building that had a bunch of businesses in it and going to each one and dropping off a business card w/a flyer-type sheet. I'm not sure how well that would work for development/programming services, but it's an idea. If you've done Word/Excel automation, you might be able to sell a few hours this way, and hope they come back for more work once they've had a chance to work with you a bit.
