>>- Einar, don't give on the Pack. At 1-5, they're still poised to strike. A 5-5 run will leave them 6-10, surely enough wins for the NFC North

>I haven't given up on the Pack (quite) yet, but I am still pretty discusted by the loss yesterday. With 20 unanswered points in the 2nd half we deserved to loose the game. Loosing key players did not help us, but out defense should not have allowed 20 points.

Bret Favre is one of the all-time good guys in sports and I hate to see his career end as ignominiously as it is with this aged, banged-up crew. It's about like Babe Ruth ending his career with the Boston Braves (which he did). His dad dies, his wife gets cancer, Katrina wipes out Louisiana, and the Packers stink. He must feel like Job. Then again, they say God gives the hardest things to those most equipped to handle it.

For a long time Broadway Joe was my favorite QB. It took me a while to realize I like Favre even more. Not just for his feats on the field, which are considerable, but for his whole demeanor. He gets that lopsided grin even when the desperation 4th and 18 try has missed and the game is lost. Best of all was when the Packers and Bucs were both strong and Favre and Warren Sapp would go at it. They were out to kill each other, to win and make the other guy eat dirt, but you could tell there was mutual respect between them. They would immediately find each other and share a laugh and a handshake after the game, no matter which team won. That's class. I also read that he is the one Packer who reliably shows up at birthday parties for Packers office employees. He doesn't have to do that.

I am in Chicago, which means I am supposed to hate the Packers. I have always liked both teams, though, and have since I was about 10. That was when the Pack were at the peak of their glory -- Lombardi, Starr, Horning, Nitschke (along with Butkus, the perfect name for a middle linebacker), Adderley, et al. And those green and gold uniforms have always been classic.

The Pack will be back. But not any time soon IMO. They let themselves get too old when they were still good but no longer quite good enough, and don't have much gas left in the tank.

Mike
