First, thank you for your message.

I understand that the part about close caption decoder. And I think most VHS recorders would trap the lines 21 and 22 (whatever they are), therefore VHS tape would have the close captions saved on the tape. I suppose DVD recorder should do the same, that is, if TV sends it the CC data, it should save it. Although, as you suggested, I should check the DVD spec to see if it has CC listed.

But my question is, when the DVD sends the CC back to the TV and you pause the replay, would the CC stay on the TV during the pause? I know that in the case of a VHS the CC data does not stay on the TV. But I wonder if TV would still show the CC when you pause DVD recorder. I went to BestBuy and most guys there sound like they know it all but when you really ask them with a pointed question as to "are you sure", they never know the answer. And they don't have a demo DVD hooked up to a TV that we could quickly record and play. I was hoping that someone may have a DVD recorder and already tried this.

>It requires a close caption decoder. This is typically done by the tv itself and not the unit. For instance Tivo does not decode captions but relies on the tv to do it. The recorder must trap the line 21 and line 22 user information section. You will need to look at the DVD recorders specs and ensure that close caption is listed there. Subtitles is not the same thing. Some of them have this feature and some do not. I would hit a store where you can see a demo of it before you buy since it is a known problem in many units.
