Well, he's concentrating on the "free" aspect of things in this article and neither VFP, SQL Server, or Access are free, so even though HSQLDB is a free product, he considers it strong enough for serious work. We know that at some level of DB size, number of users, etc., we need to move past local tables to something like SQL.
