Crystal Reports can be expensive, depending on what you need to do. As their EULA is constantly changing, you should contact Business Objects directly.
There are several good books on .Net architecture, Service Oriented Architecture, Design Patterns, etc. that can help you out here. I'm currently reading
Design Patterns Explained: A New Perspective on Object-Oriented Design, which is excellent. A search of Amazon will find many others.
