The only way I can think of is to create an application that reads the values of the com port to a dbf file. You can keep this app very simple so it is not likely to crash. Then you can have your other apps read the dbf. An application crash while connected to a com port will occasionally not release the connection and then you have to take some type of action (maybe reboot) to get the port released.
