this is the key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Netrics.SearchOpts and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Netrics.Netrics (amongst others). So the VB examples were using NetricsLib.Netrics whereas I should be using Netrics.Netrics. That seems to work.
