OK I think the most important part you can't track it as you want since it's at client location. You said backend is SQL server. If they can enable TCP/IP libraries (if not already done - default installation options does) and give you access you could test from your location (unlikely they would want to do that but who knows). I actually expect a connection problem not update. Do they say connectivity error or a more detailed explanation?
PS: I don't use RVs and might be really something related to RVs. Do you have a chance to try the same update with SPT?
