People around here were absolutely falling apart in September. The Sox' lead had shrunk from something like 17 games in early August to a game or game and a half. What most people were saying was that even if they managed to hang on and make the playoffs, they would not go into the playoffs with much confidence and would quickly be gone. One afternoon I was in the car and had a sports talk station on and they had a contest going to see who could come up with the most appropriate movie title to describe the team's late season swoon. Among the finalists were "Gone In 60 Games" and "Very Few Good Men."

Then they run the table the last week of the season and go 11-1 in the playoffs. Amazing. I don't think many people saw that coming.

On Friday there was a victory parade from U.S. Cellular Field to downtown Chicago, culminating in a ticker tape parade past City Hall on LaSalle St. That was something Chicago has not experienced much of in the past few decades. (The Bulls' victory rallies were always in Grant Park, not downtown).

You are suddenly seeing a lot of White Sox attire around here, which is also unusual. But Sox fans being Sox fans, they are grumbling and worrying again already. They don't think the Sox will come up with the money to keep Paul Konerko. And they predict the Cubs will again outdraw them next year, as they do every year. That is a continual thorn in their side, that the Cubs are the fan and media favorites and the Sox are that other team that plays on the south side somewhere. GM Kenny Williams, who assembled most of this championship team, even allowed himself a comment along those lines at the victory rally. Addressing the mass of people, he said, "Wow, I had no idea there were so many of you."
