Yes we were there at the same time. I was fortunate to stay there 3 years by extending every year. There were some in my unit that had stayed in Germany for 7 years without ever returning to the states. I was stationed first in Fulda, then Schweinfurt, then Giebelstadt (mostly around Wurzburg) for the majority of the time I was there. I drove the area numerous times when I got stuck as the NEO Warden for a year (it was supposed to be a reward, ha ha). When my year was over I missed that extra duty though! After that I became the EMO and that was fun for a year. The last year I had to go back out with everyone all the day. I was in aviation at that time in the 3d ID. We had 45 officers (pilots) and 20 enlisted. When the mark hit 4/1 many of my cohorts were purchasing Mercedes, BMWs, and Porsches and shipping them back to the states. During one of our unit christmas parties there was a terrorist threat and we all had to race back to the unit. When we got there, terrorists had bombed the building next to ours. We lost a few good friends that night. Yet there was not a word about it in the news back here in the states at the time.

>>When I was stationed in Germany back in the mid 80s, about 1/3 of our company received a week of admin leave to go skiing in Swizerland as a unit for morale and welfare! :o) It never happened again (sad to say). I had a great time. I also received a week of admin leave to go to East Berlin during the same tour as a reward for winning Division NCO of the year. I toured Berlin and East Berlin on Flag orders back when Checkpoint Charlie still existed and the zones were separate. I really enjoyed it and it was very educational.

>We must have been there about the same time...1985-1986 for me. The mark hit 4-to-1 against the dollar, and the Germans still liked Americans. Good times! I was with 2/2 ACR in Bamberg, we patrolled a large section of the East/West German border. Never did get a chance to go to Berlin, although I almost did accidentally (that would have been...awkward). "Educational" is certainly correct, and it's a shame that so many of our peers never did the same.
