I grew up with basements in Wisconsin. It was typically the warmest place in the house in the winter. Almost everyone had one and in fact, some houses were only basements. Here in North Carolina we need them (tornadoes), but don't have them because the water level is too high - basements have a tendency to flood around sea level!
