>>And it's still not finished, and still not good enough. But then I don't think all of these lives were spent just building democracy - many of them were just the collateral damage from the play of the major powers. Was it worth it? Maybe. Not yet.

>What about WWII? What is your take on that? Worth it? Or should everyone have just acted like the French? There would have been an awful lot of blond and blue walking about. Of course, I'm a good share German, of the blond and blue, so I would fit right in.

It was worth it, but again, most of the people who died there weren't in it because they were fighting for democracy or anything. They were just caught in the larger game.

And mind you, in my country we did have a homegrown rebellion which created its own army within months, and had some liberated territory during the first year of the war. Within two years it was recognized by both Britain and the Soviets (though neither liked it because they had other plans). It's slightly underrepresented in official histories for the same reason... they all had other plans.

I'd fit in as well - I was born blonde and turned somewhat brown at age of six (as did two of my daughters - one is still a blonde, but then they are 1/4 German anyway) - and it would take a keen Aryan eye to distinguish the Slavic blonde shade. But you can figure we'd still stand out for the sole reason that we can't keep our mouths shut, as you can see from my posts :).
