>The "German soldier" analogy hits the nail on the head. But growing up, I was taught that the one good thing we could take away, was what can happen if no one questions authority, and blindly follows it.

Neither did I.
A piece of news and an editorial collided today. The news? Bush: "We do not torture!" Exclamation point is mine.
This is from someone who authorized the study of the Geneva Convention for the purpose of side-stepping the torture issue. That, in and of itself, would make me question the statement. Let's not even consider the other "lies" and half-truths.
The editorial appeared in today's Atlanta-Journal Constitution. Unfortunately, it's not available in the on-line edition. The upshot of it was that things, like ethical lapses, torture, etc. Don't come from a "few bad apples", but rather from the top down. It's OK, because it's part of the culture that the head guy has created.
Harry Truman had a sign on his desk that said, "The Buck Stops Here". Bush should have a sign saying, "The Buck Stops Somewhere Down Below".
