>>We had a spurt of terrorism in the late 60s when Quebec separatists put bombs in mailboxes. As I remember 1 person was killed and some injured. Public outrage itself put a stop to it, most believe. No Quebecker, no matter the language, had ANY sympathy for that modus operandi. A little later, 2 kidnappings, with one of them being killed and left in a car trunk.

>>I was in London around the time of the package bombs (IRA) and about the only visible 'activity' by the authorities was signage everywhere advising to report suspicious packages. To me that was an appropriate level of response.
>>Today, though, governments everywhere thrive on FEAR so it is much more in their interest to over react. Even here, though we have it far less pronounced than in most other countries.

Indeed he did. I was in my early 20s then, living in Montreal. I remember things looking so grusome on the news (tanks, soldiers with machine guns, etc) that I went out to look for them myself (because even though working downtown at that time I saw none of that day-to-day). Taught me a good lesson about how the news magnifies things.

I did have a friend who was apprehended and held for 3 days totally in communicado. He had just started crossing Jacques Cartier bridge when he realized all other cars had disappeared, and then cop cars from all directions.
He told me he had a really tough time convincing them he couldn't speak French.
A month or so after he was freed Paul Rose was found and my friend turned out to look a whole lot (uncannily in my opinion, given that friend had been hunting and had some facial growth and was wearing a red/black checked hunting jacket) like him. He's probably still pis*ed off about the whole thing to this day, and I can't blame him. (imagine... UT called PIS5ED an obscenity!)
