All those rural folks that voted out of fear of Guns, God and Gays instead of voting for the party that supported the Farm Bill instead of the one that killed it several times, are now suffering big increases in fuel costs (GOP = Gas & Oil Party) which raises their farming costs per acre tremendously. Many of those, especially small family farms cannot afford these prices.
Remember we have subsidized farm prices. We have always had cheap produce in this country. Californians know how important this is when farming is the number one industry in the State, is it not? This gives these red-voting farmers two choices. Suffer more or go out of business. Many do the second and many more will.
When we reach the point were we cannot feed ourselves as a country and have to import most produce and other farm products from abroad, then you will see food prices *really* increase. Then you will see a National Security issue being raised.
Pity these good folks don't think of the kitchen-table issues at election time. They just get duped into fear of the 3Gs.
