One interesting case appeared in the news, perhaps 2 years ago: A German city wanted to publish a bilingual (German and English) touristic pamphlet. Wanting to save a professional translator, somebody came up with the bright idea of using one of the free online services to do the translation.
Only after printing 7000 copies did they realize that the free service hand "rendered the translation virtually useless", so they had to start again.
