we have a VERY similar routine for decoding some host data -
except that there are more codes used as flags to "decipher".

We read in large chunks of data and call a fllto transform the string:
translation of the code should be no problem even if you are not too fluent in c.

Since you don't have to worry about 20+ being the maximum number of
flag codes for alines() to work alines() is probably "good enough",
but for pure speed this seems taylor-made for a fll, if called often enough.
