i've done a bit research, and i was incorrect, GETOBJECT doesn't work accross machines. So your workaround is definitly neccessary.

There is another workaround using filemonikers to get at a running object on a remote server
(see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;171974 )
but this is not doable in FoxPro since Fox doesn't support non-automatable interfaces.
