>>Today, 30 years ago, was the historic meeting that started the infamous Operation Condor.
>>
>>A quick reminder: This was a secret agreement by 6 dictatorships in South America, to help each other in getting rid of political opponents. For example, if somebody who opposed the government didn't feel safe in Argentina and fled to Brazil, well, he wouldn't be safe there either.
>>
>>Many thousands were killed.
>>
>>Apart from the six dictatorships involved (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay), the U.S. also played an important role, giving its blessing to this operation. It seems the people involved thought that strengthening the dictatorships was a lesser evil, compared to the perceived threat of communism.

>There is some indication that the U.S. (at least the CIA) may have had more involvement than simply 'giving its blessing'.

Yeah, I heard they helped in the organization, amongst other things. Not wanting to take the trouble of doing lots of research, I preferred to leave it at that...
Difference in opinions hath cost many millions of lives: for instance, whether flesh be bread, or bread be flesh; whether whistling be a vice or a virtue; whether it be better to kiss a post, or throw it into the fire... (from Gulliver's Travels)
