>When user tries to change a value of a textbox (or another control) that is set to be ReadOnly = .T., message "The Control is read-only" pops up. Is it possible and how to make the control display a "custom" message?

Exclude this control from the tab sequence. Also you can return .f. from the When event thus preventing user from editting.
