You are running your own software shop, so you can establish rules
that you find most productive.
My opinion is that real developers are much more productive when they feel comfortable at their workplace. Presenting people with the challenges / goals to achieve, works much better then strict set of rules.
( Except of course coding rules & standards :) )
Dificult part is to find/keep self driven and responsible people that will
form good 'crew'. Then no port is to far and no sea is to rough :)
