being a bit irritated by Vladimir's post i reread your message, and i'm not sure from where you want to display the systray icon?!

Handling this functionality in the service itself is probably not a good idea since a service can run without a user being logged on. Or to say it straigth, using UI in a service is not good practice.

All services i've worked with provide a seperate service monitoring application, and i assumed that you're using this approach also.
