She set herself up as a middle-aged woman (which she was) reentering the job market with few skills (the situation of many poor people, including those leaving welfare) after many years, and attempted to find jobs and places to live that would balance. She found it extremely difficult to make it work. She tried three different cities, at a time when the economy was booming and jobs were supposedly plentiful.
It's as easy read, definitely worth the time.
