>Today my boss calls me to her office and asked me if I would be willing to generally put programming behind me and learn the art of Oracle DBA/PL/SQL developer. She said we have enough programmers, but lacked people with DBA skills and would like to groom someone from within. This would mean however I'll be committed to my current employer for anther two years, which wouldn't be bad. I just started to do some .NET, but I'm just good enough to be dangerous, as the saying goes. After 12 years of VFP/ASP, it would be a big change.... err little more money tho. :)

I think one of the main factors is: Would you like it? I would; it is still computer-related, and still somewhat related (databases; and I assume PL/SQL is actually programming, too). Also, you get paid to learn something new. Not bad: getting the time to study something new on your own (when it is not a regular part of your job) can be quite difficult.

You can still go back to "regular" programming (VFP?) eventually.

I made a drastic change 3 years ago, from VFP programming, to teaching computer networks (which I had to learn first, of course).

So, time to speak about the negative aspects. These sure exist, too. Mainly, doing something completely new is, indeed, quite difficult at first.

By the way, I was contracted again by my former company, some 9 months ago; so I have two part-time jobs now. Computer programming (VFP), which I still consider my strongest point, and teaching the CCNA (network) course, which I have gotten quite familiar with, too.
