>Today my boss calls me to her office and asked me if I would be willing to generally put programming behind me and learn the art of Oracle DBA/PL/SQL developer. She said we have enough programmers, but lacked people with DBA skills and would like to groom someone from within, someone who is already familiar with our database. This would mean however I'll be committed to my current employer for anther two years, which wouldn't be bad. I just started to do some .NET, but I'm just good enough to be dangerous, as the saying goes. After 12 years of VFP/ASP, it would be a big change.... err little more money tho. :)

Hi Sam,

I love coding, so I would probably not welcome the change, but would still take an "I'll try and see" attitude. I've done it in the past (do something that I wasn't really willing at first) and it's been good.

You, otoh, seem tired of coding, so this might be a welcome change of direction for you. Keep in mind that EVERYTHING has a learning curve, whether you like it or not.

Your boss seems a good businesswoman. She is aware of the fact that it's easier to get an insider trained in a new, necessary for the business, skill than to bring in a new person and train him/her in the intricacies of your database. I agree with the approach.

Have fun!

Alex
