Well, that's the other hypothesis: If one's program has many bugs, the self-esteem (and image) can be kept high by rationalizing that the bugs are in some way really caused by external factors, most notably by bugs in the programming language.

The nice thing about the two hypotheses is that they predict opposite behavior: blame others versus oneself. A scientific experiment could give proof that one of them is valid and the other not. But I think they are both valid.

I think that your hypothesis is more prone with persons who have an 'external locus of control', as psychologists call it. And my hypothesis is more prone with persons who have an internal locus of control. So, who are we blaming, others or oneself.

Now you may wonder why I think that my bet is better. The reason is that far more people have an internal locus of control.
