>>>Well, my hypothesis (that needs to be statistically tested) is that people who complain about bugs have a more negative opinion about bugs than those who do not complain. They also have less esteem of people who create bugs. And as a consequence they try harder to prevent bugs in their own programs, because each self-created bug lowers their self-esteem.
>>
>>I think that nobody wants to create bugs. I consider creating to be a consciuos process, whereas bugs in programs occur involuntarily, contrary to the intention of the programmer. I know (many) people who try a lot harder than others to prevent bugs, yet their programs may have more bugs than others'. Why would someone have less esteem for this kind of people, when all their intentions are the same: to prevent bugs.

>It is my opinion that programming is the art of problem solving. I once ask a class of newbie programming students a question on their first day. "How many people here hate making mistakes". Better then half the class rose their hand. I then told them "Programming is find problems and solving them." A bug is a problem that has not been solved yet. Like what John Lennon said in one of his songs: There are no problems, only solutions.

Re your anecdote, I wonder what the other half of the class were thinking.<s> It may sound absurd, but nobody wants to have unexpected defects in their work.
...
I guess if John Lennon were on board the Apollo 13 then the famous phrase would have been: "Houston, we need a solution" :) Nothing wrong with that...
