It mightn't have been with us THAT long, but the principles have been around for a long time. Back in Victorian times, photographers used to hand out or mail sheets of contact prints of "dirty pictures", from which businessmen could select and pay for some, which would then be dispatched to them by mail. Compare this with modern thumbnails on the Web :-)
