Jonathan are you accesing the server from a workstation or is it a local server? If you're using a workstation make sure you configured an alias name for the server and that WinXP/SP2 firewall is not blocking the port used by SQL Server. Also check that TCP/IP and/or named pipes protocols are enabled because SQL Server SP3 and up disable all network protocols by default.
